Overheat everything, they said. So I did. It’s always a matter of seconds, and in my case, a few seconds too late.
I was in my first Caldari Navy Hookbill, eager of targets and ready to fight. And most of all, I was in my new home, close to Caldari-Galente Faction Warfare space, Ishomilken system in the Citadel region. And… there was a bunch a corpies and nobody else around, so I setup a route through this low security space, to the system of Tierijev, looking for fights.
I found my luck in Okkamon system. Got myself on novice plex with corsed fingers, that one of locals (and there were many) will follow me in something, which I’ll be able to kill. Few seconds later a pilot in Federation Navy Comet frigate appeared and I’ve locked him. I was orbiting 500 meters around a beacon and pre-heated my all midslot modules (beside tracking desruptor) and was ready!
And fucking nervous as hell. My heart started to pump so much adrenaline, that I was blind from tunneling vision, and my only thought was: do not screw it up!
But I did.
He landed 5km from me and I was able to put my double webs and scram on him and managed orbit at 7,5km. My rockets started to purge his shields and after a time, I’ve noticed that I forgot to apply to him my tracking disruptor. So I did. His neutron blasters in that time erased 80% of my shield and I realized that something is wrong.
My TD has no range script!
So I decided to switch it off. He was deep in his armour and my even wasn’t scratched. And because my bloody tunneling vision I didn’t noticed that…
As you can see, scrambler is over 80% burned out, webs are right behind it. And I turned TD again, without loading the script. Sad truth had hit me right in my face: If I do not switch off overheat I’ll be dead!
First second: I decided to switch of overheat on scrambler. Got right button of my mouse when my cursor was over it, menu showed up and… warp scrambler module turned black.
Third second: I moved veeeryyyy slooooowly over afterburner….
In fourth second I’ve managed to move my mouse over Overload stack icon and pressed left mouse button. Unfortunatelly, all modules was burned to coal, so my action resulted in switching happy green light over sad black mid-mods :/
Then I realized two things: I’m dead. And a fact, that my rockets are hitting without overheat, making 30% less damage than they could! Recovering from a shock, I was able to switch overheat on them, and watching how my ship is sinking, and his slowly goes into structure I’ve waved goodbye and started spamming nearest object.
Nearest object was a station, to which I warped and heard unpleasant voice saying that I’m not allowed to dock. Damn! I forgot about a timer. Quickly grabbed my capsule to some safespot, cursing in this moment a lot about my stupidity.
Okkamon system was in the middle of my route, 7 jumps in each direction from my stations. And it witnessed “gf gf” on local and I gave an explanation what just happened – comet pilot was sure that he won’t make it, and I flied off.
Overheat everything, the second attempt to not being inattentive
I was in the second hookbill making a long loop around huge FW fleet actions near Tama and neightbours. I’ve tried to hunt but they actively were following me, so I decided to jump in side road, making them lost my trail.
I thought that losing next ship in such dumb way will be too much for newbie R1FTA pilot (and will bring a lot of shame).
In the system of Oinasiken, I found a Kestrel class frigate vessel visiting novice combat site plex. Because I’m a very brave pilot, I’ve jumped in. With everything pre-heated except TD and rockets.
Why not overheating rockets, I don’t know.
Then I started to close orbit on him because he was over 15km from the beacon.
I was closing… was closing… was closing…
He was burning out, making his orbit over 34 km and making me free of his warp disruptor. In meantime, I was in half of my armour and…
Completely! I’ve noticed, that I was so focused not to burn this time my modules, that I forgot to switch them on! Fortunatelly for my nerves, proudness and stupidity – I was 55km off him, when armour alarm started to buzzing and in ship in very bad shape, I was managed to bail off on nearest asteroid belt, then to safe spot.
What an evening! I’ve realized that my inattentiveness has a reason, the reason was a late night, so I said to corpies good bye, and went to sleep.
- there is no need to overheat if you have your target in range
- overheat icon is faster than trying to make it via right mouse menu
- pre-run modules while targeting
At least fight with the comet was mine in its first phase 😛
